Community Spotlight: Balham Women's Institute

Community Spotlight: Balham Women's Institute

"Culture, charity, craft & cake!" That's the motto of the Balham Women's Institute – and they’re always eager for new recruits! Our Community Reporter Rachel Johnstone tells us more.....

The Balham WI are a young, and young-at-heart, modern London WI – women of all ages are welcome to join! They’re a friendly, diverse, & inclusive bunch who meet at 7.30pm on the second Tuesday of each month at the cocktail bar in The Bedford pub.

The group endeavours to reflect its motto in its meetings and so offer a varied agenda to appeal to all members – each month they host a speaker and/or activity at their regular meetings. Additionally, they hold bake sales and fundraisers not just for themselves (including their members' bursaries for the WI's own Denman College) but also to support Hestia Wandsworth Domestic Abuse Services. Outside of meetings, they have a variety of clubs (and are always open to new ones) and social events to suit all sorts of member interests.

The Balham WI is part of both the larger national WI organisation and also the London group of Surrey Federation of WI’s and enjoy meeting up with neighbouring WI’s a few times a year.

2019 was an exciting year for the group and they’ve an action-packed 2020 ahead, including some great speakers confirmed.

In February the group were visited by Spires Streetlink, a project that engages with vulnerable women involved in sex work, to help deal with their complex health, social, psychological and emotional needs.

Their upcoming schedule includes:

March: Haidée Drew Workshops - Jesmonite necklaces (RSVP required)

April: Mindfulness embroidery

May: #Notyourporn campaign talk

June: Chocolate talk and tasting

July: DIY Botanical wall hanging

August: Annual picnic

Sept: Don't fear the smear campaign talk

October: Meet your members social

November: AGM Quiz

December: Xmas meeting with craft
