Community Spotlight: Bec Korfball Club

Looking for a fun new sport to get involved with? Let us introduce you to korfball, the world’s only exclusively mixed-sex sport! We’ve a club on our doorstep that’s one of the largest and most successful in the country and who are always looking for new players of all abilities!

Our Community Reporter Rachel Johnstone tells us all about Bec Korfball Club!

What’s korfball?!

Korfball is a game that from the outside looks a little bit like netball and basketball, but is entirely different when playing. As a sport that’s not incredibly well known, it might surprise you to learn that there are over 90,000 people playing korfball, in about 500 clubs, and in over 70 countries!

Played both indoors and outdoors, a korfball team is made up of 8 players, split evenly between males and females. Players can only mark and defend a player of the same sex, and once defended, an attacking player may not shoot for goal, but instead must pass. This encourages dynamic play and prevents any limitations there might be between two opposing players in terms of their height.  A game lasts 60 minutes, and the winner is the team with the most points at the end.

Bec Korfball Club

Right on our doorstep we have Bec Korfball Club, founded in 1948, and one of the largest and most successful clubs in the country. They’ve a membership of over 50 players with 5 senior and 2 junior teams ranging in ability.

This friendly, local club currently runs a variety of training sessions each week in venues around Tooting, Brixton and Clapham that cater to players of all abilities – from complete beginners to seasoned internationals. The club prides itself on always welcoming new members and strives to provide the perfect environment in which to enjoy this unique sport. They also have a very active social side too!

Getting involved!

Getting involved is really easy! Training sessions take place pretty much all year round on Tuesdays from 19:30 to 21:30 for adults and from 18:30 to 19:30 for juniors. All levels are welcome and training is located at Graveney School, Welham Road, SW17 9BU. Newbies are encouraged to go along and get involved as the season doesn’t end until May!

European Champions!

In January, the first team travelled to Germany for the Europa Shield 2020,  a competition they’ve done very well in before. Across the space of a weekend they played teams from Germany, Portugal, and Catalonia and became champions for the second year running!
