Community Spotlight: Southside Players

Community Spotlight: Southside Players

The cast and crew of Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, Southside Players production in early summer 2019!

This week, our Community Reporter Rachel Johnstone gives us the lowdown on another fantastic local group – one that’s been keeping South London audiences entertained for over 30 years!

Here, Rachel tells us all about the Southside Players.....

--

The Southside Players are a non-professional theatre group based in the Balham and Clapham South areas. They’ve over 30 years experience with numerous awards under their belt. The group was launched in 1987, and aim to provide high quality “drama on your doorstep” to local audiences. With a membership totalling over 60 people, they have some exciting plans for 2020!

What’s on?

In the past, the Southside Players have put on productions of Greek Tragedy all the way through to pantomime! Their last performance of ‘Stage Door’, saw the cast put on a tremendous performance of the comedy – set in the mid 1930s - about a group of women living in New York attempting to find work in the world of show business.

This February, however,  the group will perform William Shakespeare's Richard III, directed by Julie Weston. Ticket sales have already opened and can be found here. Performances take place at Balham’s Chestnut Grove Academy Theatre between February 19th and 22nd, with prices ranging from £9-12. Briefly put, the play is about the nasty Richard III, whose intent on gaining the crown of England for himself, leads to conspiracy and the murder of his own family and friends.

How to get involved:

If life on the stage is appealing, the group welcome all, regardless of age and experience. To get involved in a particular production the Southside Players encourage you to come and watch some of their shows to get a feel for them and the types of performances they put on. By contacting the group, the play director will get in touch for an audition date – more information can be found here. If the limelight is not for you however, then fear not – there are various backstage roles too! If it’s set design you are after, or even costume-making or front of house work, then the group would love to hear from you!
