What's on in Balham Library this December?!
It’s the Christmas season at Balham Library, with all sorts of festive events planned to round off the year in spectacular fashion. Children’s Library Manager Lucinda tell us all we need to know!
---
Happy Holidays from everyone at Balham Library!
As December rolls on, we’re getting ready for the holidays with events ranging from a ballet workshop built around The Nutcracker to a STEM-infused snow day. As usual, all our events are free, and please get in touch to learn more…
Warm up with a good book…
If you’re looking for a good winter read to warm you up this December you are in luck, as Balham Library’s literary advent calendar is back! This year, we’re featuring books chosen by library users and library staff alike with titles ranging from picture books to classic novels, so if you’d like to see what our favourite winter reads are, please come and visit the calendar in the children’s library.
Children’s Events:
Of course, libraries these days are about more than just books, as our events roster shows. We’ll be running a variety of crafts in the library over December, including an teen-designed Christmas quiz on December 16th where you can test your knowledge of winter children’s books, an eco-friendly crafternoon on the 20th, where we’ll try our hands at upcycling and making gifts, and an afternoon spent decorating the library with snowflakes and paper chains on December 19th. We’re also planning an afternoon of board game fun on December 27th – perfect for everyone who is stuck in London and needs an excuse to get out of the house – and a STEM-based “Fake Snow Day” on January 3rd.
Perhaps most excitingly of all, we’re looking forward to a magical Christmas dance workshop in the children’s library on December 14th. Built around Tchaikovsky’s incredible Nutcracker ballet, the event includes two separate workshops for 2-6 year olds and 7-12 year olds, as well as a short performance from professionally-trained dancer and teacher Laura Dodge. While this event is free, we suspect it will be highly subscribed, so please book in advance.
Winter Reading Challenge:
If you enjoyed the Summer Reading Challenge, we’re excited to introduce you to the Winter Mini Challenge: another rewarding literacy scheme from the Reading Agency. This year’s challenge features Phillip Reeve’s and Sarah McIntyre’s Pugs of the Frozen North, is run entirely online, and is a great way to keep children reading over the holidays. Visit the Winter Mini Challenge website to find out more, or ask for information at the children’s library desk.
The Christmas Quiz:
Wandsworth Libraries famous Christmas Quiz is back for another year, with free DVD vouchers for every completed entry and a grand prize draw on Saturday 14th. To enter, simply collect a quiz sheet from the library desk, then fill it in and return it to any Wandsworth Library by 5pm on Friday 13th. This year’s grand prizes include a meal at the Alma restaurant, two Backyard cinema tickets, two Southside cinema tickets, and some mulled wine, so it’s well worth having a go!
Happy New Year!
As we approach the end of 2019, it’s good to look back as well as forward. We had an amazing year at Balham Library, from drag queen storytimes to visits from Albus Dumbledore and we hope you’ve enjoyed it as much as we have. We’ve got lots more up our sleeve for 2020, but until then have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Alex & Lucinda
