Community Spotlight: Neighbourhood Network SW12 and SW17

Local residents enjoying one of the NN SW12 & SW17 regular coffee meetings at Richard's Kitchen in Tooting Bec!

As part of a new series, our Community Reporter Rachel Johnstone gives us the lowdown on some of the fantastic community groups, clubs and organisations that help make Balham and the surrounding area such a great place to live.

First up, it’s Neighbourhood Network SW12 and SW17. Take it away, Rachel...!

The Neighbourhood Network SW12 and SW17 are a group of local Balham and Tooting residents that regularly meet up with the aim to strengthen links in their community. Anyone is welcome to join in! Since 2013 they've provided activities and events to get locals meeting each other, sharing skills, and supporting one another.

What do they do?

The group created The Balham to Tooting Bec Trail, a podcast that highlights the local history of the area as you walk from one point to the other, completely narrated by those who live and work in Balham and Tooting. Downloads are accessible on their website, along with a map of Balham High Road with reference points, and a recommended reading list if any of the topics catch your fancy!

Previously the group has organised regular activities for children and adults alike. Examples of these are ‘Rhyme time for under 5s’ and ‘Talk English’- a group for parents who want to work on their English language skills with others new to speaking English.

November was a busy month for the group, as they got their hands dirty joining the Tooting Healthy Streets group, picking up litter along the high street – an activity aimed at keeping the Tooting area safer, cleaner and greener.

They also host a fortnightly coffee meeting on Wednesday mornings, 10:45am-12pm at Richard’s Kitchen on Tooting Bec Road. This is an opportunity to meet your neighbours and have a catch up over a cup of tea. The group are keen for new ideas and to focus on areas they may not have explored yet, making this the perfect location to share your thoughts and to get involved. The next one is on Wednesday 8th January.

How can you get involved?
