What's on in Balham Library this August!

The summer season is well underway at Balham Library with lots going on! Library manager, Alex Martin, gives us the lowdown!

The Summer Reading Challenge is now in full swing! This year’s theme, Space Chase, marks the 50th anniversary of the moon landing and the 20th anniversary of the Summer Reading Challenge program, and so we’re spending the summer exploring the universe in search of aliens, knowledge, and, of course, books!  To complete the challenge and win prizes, medals, and certificates, children are encouraged to read six (or more!) library books over the summer holidays, so come on in and sign up today….

As well as the Space Chase Summer Reading Challenge, we’ve got a multitude of events taking place in the children’s library this summer, from author visits to juggling workshops, so if you’re not currently packing a bag for exciting adventures elsewhere, we’d love to see you in the library instead. Some of our highlights include our new drop-in Juggling Club, on Thursdays from 3-3.30pm, and our popular Rubik Cube workshop, Cubing with Carole, which will be running on Thursday from 2-2.45pm over the summer. Please bring your own Rubik Cubes and juggling balls if you have them.

We’re also welcoming back Balham Children’s Centre and their Friday morning Messy Play sessions in Balham Library Hall. These are designed for 0-5 year olds and will run from 10-11am and 11.30am-12.30pm on the 2nd, 9th and 16th August.

If you’re feeling creative, we’ve got two great sessions for you. On Monday August 5th at 3pm, join us for Write out of this world, a creative writing workshop for ages 8 . This inspiring session will encourage young writers to explore the universes of their own imaginations and find creative ways to see the world a little differently. Then, on Monday August 12 at 3pm, we’ll be visited by John Currivan and the Little Room Comic Factory: a graphic novel writing workshop for ages 10 . This is the perfect workshop for anyone who loves comics, wants to create their own, or even just to learn  to draw the perfect character. Visit the Little Room Comic Factory, get inspired, and check out some of our great graphic novels at the same time.

We’ve also got some great family sessions taking place this month. On Monday 19th August, the author of Andy Aardvark and The Dinosaur, James Charlton, will be taking over our regular 11am storytime session to give an exciting author presentation and introduce his new book, and from 5-6.30pm on August 19th we’ll also be running a drop in Board Games session in the children’s library.

Finally, we’ve got some great educational sessions happening this summer as well. The excellent tutors from Explore Learning will be running five free workshops in the library this summer, on Wednesday afternoons between 2 and 3pm. These are Fun with Phonics (July 29th, ages 4-6), Superhero Shapes (August 7th, ages 4-6), A Squire’s Journey to Knighthood: Punctuation (August 14th, ages 5-6), A Knights Journey to the King’s Throne: Nouns, Adjectives and Verbs (August 21st, ages 7-9) and Be a Magic Math’ Sorcerer: Times Tables (August 28th, ages 8-9).

We’ve also got a creative maths enrichment session being offered from 11am to 12.30pm on August 21st by Maths Explorers, who claim to have something for everyone…even if they hate maths! (You might catch an intrigued Children’s Librarian sneaking into this; to be honest…I’m not the biggest fan of maths either!)

This may look like a lot, but it’s only a taster of all the amazing adventures taking place in the children’s library this summer! Please do come down, speak to staff, and find out more about the reading challenge and our other activities.

It’s a bit quieter in the adult library but we’re busy beavering away to get ready for the launch of our new writing club in September, buying lots of exciting new fiction & some of the librarians are trying to convince Lucinda to let them take part in the challenge. You don’t get the chance to win a gold medal and stickers every day!

Happy holidays!
