What's on in Balham Library this July!
There’s loads planned at Balham Library this July – Children’s Library Manager, Lucinda Murray, gives us the lowdown!
---
It may be sunny outside but the librarians here at Balham are busy beavering away inside getting the Children’s library ready for this summer’s reading extravaganza. Read on for more information…
Superstar Story Session
To celebrate the aforementioned Summer Reading Challenge and its launch at Balham Library, we’re being joined by two legends of the screen; Glynis Barber and Michael Brandon! Best known to some of us for their work together on Dempsey & Makepeace, but famous for a myriad of other TV and Film appearances (Michael’s voice will be familiar to fans of Thomas the Tank Engine!). They’ll both be reading from some favourite children’s stories and welcoming us to the start of the Space Chase reading challenge.
If you’ve not heard of the Summer Reading Challenge before, you’ve been missing out! The Summer Reading Challenge is an annual celebration of reading and its positive impact on young ones. Children ages 0-17 are encouraged to read 6 books over the holidays, for which they’ll receive a variety of rewards - folder, stickers, bookmarks and more. This year’s theme is Space Chase, a nod to the 70th anniversary of the moon landings and a chance to play detective across the galaxy, hunting down missing books from the library of our space based family, The Rockets.
For more information on the challenge, its history and its benefits to your child’s reading, click here!
To keep you all entertained over the summer we’ve got a myriad of events for children of all ages; we’re being joined by local author/illustrators Thiago & Ana de Moraes for an amazing story telling/drawing workshop. The library’s going to be taken over by Zoolab who will be introducing us to all sorts of creepy crawlies and amazing animals. There are robot workshops, maths marathons and much more. Keep an eye out on our website for more information.
Tech talks & tech help
Libraries across Wandsworth have been having great fun working with local charity Communitech London to run Tech & Tea sessions. These are informal sessions – often based around a simple tech issue that combine a talk and workshop designed to introduce new tech and ideas without the stress and pressure associated with new devices and systems. Communitech would love to start running sessions in Balham and are looking for a local paid co-ordinator and volunteers to help out with the classes themselves. If this is something that would interested get in touch with the library by email at balham.library@gll.org. If you’d be interested in heading to one of the sessions already booked in Wandsworth, click here for more information.
As well as all the fun stuff, we’ve got all our regular activities running over the summer and of course lots of great books, DVDs and CDs to borrow. Hope to see you at the library soon…
