Jolly hockey sticks! Daisy Pulls It Off is coming to Balham!

Jolly hockey sticks! Daisy Pulls It Off is coming to Balham!

| by Editor | Posted in Balham News, Balham Arts, Entertainment

February half-term will see Balham’s award-winning theatre group, Southside, staging ‘Daisy Pulls It Off’ by Denise Deegan, at Chestnut Grove Theatre.

Performances will be on Wednesday 20th to Friday 22nd February at 7.45pm and Saturday 23rd February at 3pm.

About the show

As Britain negotiates the challenges of Brexit and more, let Southside Players take you back to a simpler, jollier time and place – Grangewood School for Young Ladies in 1927. Who’s up for a midnight feast in the dorm?

Daisy Meredith, daughter of an opera-singing single mother, has won a place at exclusive Grangewood purely on merit – but as a scholarship girl, Daisy faces snobbery and false accusations. Being a stout-hearted plucky kind of gal, Daisy overcomes all prejudice while she and best chum Trixie embark on a search for the treasure that could save the fortunes of the school.

The fifteen-strong cast will perform the show with only five benches and 15 broomsticks as their set and props. Everything else is mimed and left to the audience’s imagination. Oh, except for the odd recorder.

‘Daisy Pulls it Off’ is an affectionate parody of wholesome adventure stories, such as those by Angela Brazil, about life in a girls’ boarding school. When it was originally staged in the West End (1983 – 1986), the production won an Olivier Award and Drama Theatre Award for Best Comedy.

With a script that shows off the 1920s clipped language and knowing influences of St Trinian’s and the Famous Five, the show promises to be a fast-paced hoot for the whole family. Director Emma Crocombe promises a jolly spiffing time for all – jubilate!
